Historical locations of the Frankfort, Will County, Illinois post office
Researching the historical locations of post offices can be challenging. Locating the names of the postmasters was relatively simple.
The names of postmasters appointed before 1832 are found in the NationalArchives microfilm publication M1131, Record of Appointment of Postmasters, Oct.1789-1832. Postmasters appointed after 1832 are found in the National Archives microfilm publication M841,Record of Appointment of Postmasters, 1832-Sept. 30, 1971. The Frankfort, Will County, Illinois microfilm records are not available after 1954. Also in Record Group 28 is the Post Office Department Reports of Site Location 1837-1950 on microfilm M1126. The post office location microfilm has not been digitized. Microfilm M1126, Post Office site locations 1836-1950may be viewed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Viewing the microfilm, the Frankfort, Illinois post office maps are available from 1865 to 1905 (see slide show). The microfilm documents offer a written description of the location and a general area map. The maps show no town or village details. The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. offers a variety of maps. The following examples for Frankfort are included in the postal map collection. The 1894 Illinois map shows Will County and the towns with railroad routes. The 1927 map of Will County shows the towns, routes, direction of the rural delivery and dots for houses. The 1926 Sanborn Fire Map shows the buildings in town including the post office (see slide show).
Postmaster names are listed in historical books for Will County, Illinois. The pre-1865 locations are given as being in the postmaster’s place of business. City directories are another source for post office locations.
