The 1900 Bureau County, Illinois, US Federal census ED 14, sheet 11, Dwelling 202, Family 219, for Sarah Giles Woodin Raisbeck reads that she had 13 children with 7 living. The following is my account of the seven living children. Please share your research!

Martin Luther Woodin was born 8 August 1873, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. On 22 December 1897 in Seneca, LaSalle County, Illinois, he married Eugenie Luella Couch 1878-1959, my great-aunt. Martin Luther died 7 September 1931 in Marseilles, LaSalle County, Illinois.

Wilma Irene Woodin, "Billie" Thank you for sharing your family

One of their children was Wilma Irene Woodin, 1922-2016. Thank you to Wilma Woodin Morey’s family for all these beautiful photos. Wilma was my 1^st cousin 1x removed.

Walter Abel Woodin was born October 1869 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. According to Wilma’s notes, I read “Left home at an early age. Last known to be in eastern U.S.”  Using computer and digital records, I have possibly found two wives for Walter Abel. At this time, May 2020, I find no children. An estimated death date is between 1940 and 1957 in Maryland. Again, I am unable to find any death notices. See my online trees at Ancestry.com or MyHeritage.com for more details.

Mary Ellen Woodin was born 4 December 1865 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. The family came to American in 1880. Mary Ellen married first Charles William Van Tassell, 1855-1905, on 28 November 1884 in LaSalle County, Illinois. According to Wilma's notes, “Mary Ellen & Charles homesteaded in North Dakota Lived in Sod hut (Soddie) first few years. He died after just a few years.”

Mary Ellen married second to William Hopton, 1868-1956, exact date unknown, the year was 1907 in North Dakota. Wilma writes, “A widower with several children she helped raise.” According to the 1910 Burleigh County, North Dakota, US Federal census, ED 25, sheet 15B, Dwelling 307, family 307, Mary Ellen had no children. According to the 1920 census, the family had moved back to Marseilles, LaSalle County, Illinois. Mary Ellen died in Marseilles on 24 September 1942. William Hopton continued to live in Marseilles near the Woodin family until his death.

Ann Woodin was born April 1862 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. She came to America about 1880? Ann was married to George Edwin Stoney on 3 July 1883 in LaSalle County, Illinois. Hopefully records of this marriage will be found in the LaSalle County court house. When did George travel to America? When did the family and their three children return to England? A son was born in England in 1895. The family is enumerated in the 1901 and 1911 census in England. Ann died in Lincolnshire, England, in 1912. A death certificate for her would be helpful.

Mary Alice Woodin was born 26 October in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. In January 1881, Mary Alice married Ruben James Haynes, 1857-1927, in Bromsgrove. The family of six came to America about 1889 or 1890. The last child was born in LaSalle County, Illinois. Mary Alice died in Marseilles, LaSalle County on 10 March 1926.

Jane Woodin was born January 1855 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. Jane married Emanuel James, 1852-1913, in Yorkshire, England on 12 December 1881. Jane died January 1918 in Derby, Derbyshire, England. The exact dates for birth and death need to be verified.

Eliza Woodin was born October 1851 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. This information is from the 1861, 1871 England census and the Civil Registration Birth Index. This is about as much as I know in records for her. BUT, here is the conflict. I can produce index records from Ancestry that offer a suggestion that her husband was Harry Barley. These are indexes only, not the actual records. Most of the trees offer someone else. If I follow the records for this other name, I have no connection to the middle name given to her. Also, some of the records offer a surname of Wooding or even a father, Joseph Wooding. I am able to find both Abel Woodin and Joseph Wooding in the same early England census records. From my research, I believe these are two separate families. Please offer records, beyond indexes or indexing of records to help verify this family. THANK YOU!!!

Sarah Raesbeck Woodin 1831-1908

Who is Sarah Raesbeck Woodin? According to the photo she is “Dad’s Mother.” This photograph is one on many from the Wilma Woodin Collection. Wilma Woodin Morey, 1922-2016, was my mother’s cousin or my first cousin once removed. So, “Dad’s Mother” would be the mother of Martin Luther Woodin, 1873-1931, or the wife of Abel Woodin, 1827-1887.

With the use of online computer digital images, I was no closer to identifying Sarah than the paper copies I received in the early 1990s. Maureen Taylor, The PhotoDetective,  tells me that every photograph wants to tell me a story. So, Sarah what is your story? What records are now digitized that Wilma did not have access to years ago?

Sarah Giles was baptized 2 November 1831 in Bromsgrove, Worcester, England according to the Family History Library Film Number 321128. The index for the baptism date is 1831 and several census records agree. The 1841 and 1851 English Census records approximate 1832. So, when the quarantine is over, this will need to be verified (May 2020). Her father is listed as James Giles; her mother is listed as Mary Giles. The 1861 English Census reads that Mary’s father is Richard Lewis.

Sarah Giles married Abel Woodin on 9 June 1851 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. According to digital records, the family crossed the Atlantic in 1880. Abel died 1887 and was buried in LaSalle County, Illinois. Sarah married a second time to John Raisbeck on 17 September 1890 in Grundy County, Illinois, Illinois Marriages FHL film 001415756. View the 1900 United States Federal Census, John, Sarah and Thomas were enumerated in Bureau County, Illinois. Thomas was born in 1881 in Illinois. Thomas’ obituary reads that he was born in Braceville, Grundy County. At this time, my further research reveals that Elizabeth Wilson was the mother of Thomas and Rachael Raisbeck. Sarah was still married to Abel Woodin in 1881. Family papers reveal Sarah’s death date as 1908, as of May 2020 I am unable to find an obituary or any document.

For me, the photo question has been answered, Sarah was born Giles, married first time Abel Woodin, married second time John Raisbeck.

Wilma Woodin Morey, March 1922 - October 2016

Wilma Morey, 94, of Marseilles, passed away Saturday October 15, 2016 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday Oct. 18 at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles with Rev. Kihwan Choi of Marseilles United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Wilma was born March 17, 1922 in Ottawa to Martin and Eugenia (Couch) Woodin. In 1941, she married Jim Morey of Marseilles, who preceded her in death in 2001.
She was a member of Marseilles United Methodist Church, and had been on the board and was past president of the Marseilles Nursing Service. She was a member of Home Extension and a founding member of Kimble Thimble Quilt Club. She enjoyed designing and painting china.
Wilma is survived by two sons, Jerry (Dorothy) Morey of Chillicothe and Tim (Rita) Morey of Marseilles; five grandchildren, Randy (Carol), Steve (Becky), Tim Jr. (Erin), Tanya (Mike) Dial and Trent (Julie); and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her daughter-in-law, Sherry Morey; and six siblings, Clarence, Helen, Eugene, Walter, Nellie, and Mary.
The preferred form of remembrance would be memorials to the Marseilles Nursing Service or to the United Methodist Church.
Her grandchildren will be pallbearers.

HAMILTON
R.C. Hamilton died very suddenly at his home in the north part of the city Wednesday evening, July 26, aged about 55 years. Death was due to a rupture of the gall bladder. The surviving relatives are a widow, three sons and four daughters.

Mr. Robert C. Hamilton died at his home on Second and Jefferson streets in Lockport about 7:30 o'clock, Wednesday evening, July 26, 1911, aged about 50 years.
Mr. Hamilton had not been feeling well for some time, but did not complain much. Wednesday morning he left home about nine o'clock to do some work at the Leiser home northeast of the city. When near the Carlson woods he became dizzy. After a short rest he returned home arriving there about 2 p.m. Medical aid was summoned but he was not considered dangerously ill until later in the day. He died of internal hemorrhages.
Mr. Hamilton was born in Canada, March 12, 1861, and came to this part of the country while a boy. He learned the carpenter trade and was an excellent workman. He was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Baumgartner of Lockport, Dec. 28, 1885. They would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary had he lived until December.
Besides the widow there are eleven children: Albert C. Hamilton (married), Edward, Robert,Harry and Martin of Lockport; Mrs. Thomas (Florence) Morey, of Marseilles; Elsie, Gertrude, Kathleen Hamilton of Lockport, Mildred and Mabelle of Lockport
The funeral took place Saturday at 2 p.m. from the house and 2:30 from the Congregational church. Interment at Lockport cemetery.

The body has been removed to the Goodale Funeral Home, where friends may call after 1 o'clock Friday afternoon. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock and in St. Paul's Lutheran church at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Walter Rehold, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lockport cemetery.

She was born in Lockport Aug. 31, 1867; and had been an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and Aid society.
Surviving are ten children, Mrs. Florence Morey of Marseilles, Ill., Albert C. Mrs. Woodin, 81, Dies; Rites Wednesday
MARSEILLES - Mrs. Eugenie Louella Woodin, 81, widow of Martin L. Woodin, who resided with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Morey at 1232 Washington St., died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria, where she was moved from the Morey home Saturday. One week ago, Mrs. Woodin suffered a hip fracture in the Morey home.
Funeral rites will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Seals-Campbell chapel, the Rev. Arthur Landwehr, Marseilles Methodist Church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 12 noon Tuesday.
Mrs. Woodin, born Oct. 18, 1878 in Seneca, was Eugenie Louella Couch, daughter of Eugene Couch and Nellie Armstrong Couch. After her marriage to Martin L. Woodin, she lived on a farm south of Ottawa for a number of years and had made her home in Marseilles the past 36 years.
She leaves besides her daughter, Mrs. James (Wilma) Morey, three sons and three other daughters, Clarence A. Woodin of Danville, Ill.; Eugene (Ted) Woodin, Riverview cemetery sexton who lives in Manlius Twp; Walter R. Woodin of Seneca; Mrs. Helen Goere of Alamagordo, N. Mex.; Mrs. Nellie Perrin of Naperville and Mrs. Mary Yoder of Albuquerque, N. Mex. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Schuler and Mrs. Mildred Culbertson, both of Lockport in addition to numerous grandchildren, also great-grandchildren.
Dies in Peoria
Word has been received in the city of the death of Mrs. Eugenie Woodin of Marseilles, on Sunday, at 4 p.m. in a Peoria hospital.
Mrs. Woodin is well known in Lockport thru visits made to the home of her sister, Mrs. William Schuler, of Lockport. She is also survived by another sister, Mrs. Mildred Culberson. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.

Mr. Woodin, was born Oct. 12, 1902, in Marseilles, to Martin and Eugenie (Couch) Woodin. He married Helen Morey in 1925.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Ernest of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Martin of Marseilles; two daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Marlene) Falk of Payne, Wise., and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Peek of Seneca; 21 grandchildren; 34 great -grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. James (Wilma) Morey of Marseilles and Mrs. Helen Giere of Albuquerque, N.Y.

Mrs. Woodin was born Oct. 17, 1908, in Lockport, Il., to Thomas and Florence (Hamilton) Morey. She married Eugene E. "Ted" Woodin of Marseilles in 1925. He died in 1988. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Martin of Marseilles and Ernest of Cooperstown, N.Y.; two daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Marlene) Falk of Poynette, Wis., and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Peek of Earlville; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Martin and James Morey, both of Marseilles, and Thomas Morey Jr. of Sheridan; and three sisters, Mrs. Florence McHenry of Marseilles, Mrs. Lillian Hildy of Fort Adkinson, Wis., and Mrs. Russell (Dorothy) Stewart of Brookfield, Ill.

Mrs. Woodin was born Oct. 17, 1908, in Lockport to Thomas and Florence (Hamilton) Morey. She married Eugene (Ted) Woodin in 1925.
Services were Monday at Seals-Campbell Chapel, Marseilles. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery, also in Marseilles.
Among the survivors are two sons; two daughters, including Mrs. Robert (Helen) Peek of Earlville; 21 grand-children, 34 great-grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Woodin was born March 4, 1930 in Marseilles to Eugene "Ted" and Helen (Morey) Woodin. In 1950 he married Lucille Dandley of California. He served in the Navy from 1947 to 1968. He was a member and past commander of Marseilles V.F.W. Post 5506.
He is survived by his wife; his parents; two sons, Richard Wayne Jr. of Tempe, Ariz. and Eugene of Marseilles; five daughters, Mrs. Marlene Gulledge of Perryville, Ark., Mrs. Marilyn Creekmore, Mrs. Margie Martinez, Marcia Beals and Marie Woodin, all of Marseilles; two brothers, Martin of Marseilles and Ernest of Cooperstown, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Louis (Marlene) Falk of Poynette, Wis. and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Peek of Seneca and seven grandchildren.

She was born on April 29, 1952, in San Diego, Calif, to Richard and Lucylle (Dandley) Woodin.
She is survived by her mother of Marseilles; two brothers, Richard Wayne of Palatine and Eugene of Marseilles; four sisters, Mrs. Jack (Marlene) Gulledge of Perryville, Ark., Mrs. Marilyn Cheekmore and Mrs. Margie Martinez, both of Marseilles and Marie Woodin of Utica and her grandmother, Mrs. Helen Woodin of Marseilles.
She was preceded in death by a daughter and her father.

Walter R. "Johnny" Woodin, 79, Seneca, formerly of Marseilles, died Sunday evening at Morris Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Seals-Campbell Chapel with the Rev. Charles Klosterman of the Marseilles United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Woodin was born March 24, 1904, in Seneca, to Martin and Eugenie (Couch) Woodin. He married Mary Studebaker in 1929 and she died in 1953. In 1965, he married Ruth Monroe Beldon. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1925-29. He was retired from Spicer Gravel and a member of the Operating Engineers No. 150.
He is survived by his wife; one son, David of Malta; one daughter, Mrs. Patricia Johnson of Rockford; two stepsons, Robert Beldon of Marseilles and William Beldon of Manasses, Va.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Edwin (Barbara) McNabb of Morris; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Giere of Albuquerque, N.M., Mrs. John (Maryellen) Self of Rogers, Ark., and Mrs. James (Wilma) Morey of Marseilles; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and nine step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, one brother, one sister, one son and one daughter.
